Getting Lucky

Here’s my latest release called Getting Lucky. It was first published by Evernight Publishing in 2013.

It was one of my favorite stories to write because Megan and Andy are both broken characters who are down on their luck but things are about to change. It’s actually their sudden change in fortune that brings them into one another’s lives.

It’s a story about finding hope, recovering from past demons, falling in love, and yes, getting lucky too.

If you didn’t check it out in 2013, I’d love for you to do so now because like I said, it really is one of my favorite stories. I know it will tug on your heart strings and you’ll be cheering for these two people throughout the story.

Getting Lucky1

Do you feel lucky today?

Megan Scott changed her name and escaped to Seattle, hoping to put her past and her abusive ex behind her. Her sister told her bad luck couldn’t last forever, and with that in mind she purchased a ticket hoping to be one of the ten people to win a key that would open the door to a dream home.

Andy Hill is starting life anew. He lost his family and home but feels deep down that bad luck has to end sometime.

When a mix up with the winning keys puts Megan and Andy in a situation they never thought they’d find themselves in, Megan has to put her trust in a man again, and Andy has to accept that there’s no going back and fixing bad mistakes.

Learning to move on in life is sometimes a hard lesson but it’s also a chance to get lucky.

Here’s an excerpt…

Megan’s legs shook so much that by the time she arrived at the house she didn’t think she’d be able to get out of her car, let alone walk up to the check-in desk. Floodlights had been turned on and a beam of light played against the house’s shiny black front door. She fingered the key. She had a one in ten chance that in less than an hour the house would be hers.

Here goes.

She made her way across the street and up the path to the desk where a young man in his early twenties sat with sheets of paper in front of him.

“Hi, my name’s Megan Scott.”

“Hello Megan, if you could sign here next to your name and then wait over there with the other contestants,” he said, pulling out a sheet of paper for her. She quickly signed before her hand shook again, and then walked over to the lawn where two older men, one on a walker, three women, all older than her, and a girl about twenty, blowing bubble gum, stood in a line. She smiled but no one smiled back. No one was talking either. Instead they eyed one another cautiously which made her legs tremble even more.

She fingered her key again as two more people joined the group, and then a man probably a bit older than herself walked toward them. She’d seen him before but couldn’t think where. Maybe he’d visited the museum, but she knew it was someplace else. He smiled at her, she smiled back. Now she remembered. He’d been the idiot driving the car that had almost hit her. He stood beside her and they glanced at one another and then looked away. The scent of his aftershave drifted her way as the wind picked up. She didn’t think she’d ever like the smell of cologne again, because Ted had almost bathed in the stuff, but this man’s brand was different, and was more subtle and spicy. She shifted her feet, wishing the contest would soon be over and she’d know either way whether she was a homeowner.

Megan glanced at the man again. That had been stupid because he was looking her way. They didn’t say anything but both coughed before quickly looking away. When he’d been driving, she’d focused more on trying not to hit his car, but now that all her attention was solely on him, she realized that he was cute and had gorgeous blue eyes.

She hadn’t checked out a man in so much detail, and for this long, since she’d first laid eyes on Ted. Maybe it was her nerves and she was using it as a way to take her mind off the whole thing.

Maybe.

Saturday Night Blues

I’m trying my best to play catch up with all the books I’m getting rights back to because I want to give some of them a major overhaul. It’s taking time away from my new stories so I hope you’ll bear with me.

Here’s one I re-released last week. It’s Saturday Night Blues (first published by Evernight Publishing in 2013), and it’s now told from a dual first person perspective.

Hope you enjoy the updated version…

What’s a girl to do when she’s single and it’s Valentine’s Day?

If you’re Natasha Hargreaves you babysit your nephew. However, not all is lost when a mishap with a large vase lands her in the ER with an overworked but very sexy, Dr. David Walker.

David’s not usually a doctor to fall for a patient but there’s something about Natasha that makes his heart beat faster and forces him to break the rules about asking her out.

Are they a match made in heaven and will Natasha be able to handle a doctor’s unsociable hours of work?

A Cowboy’s Heart and What I’ve Been Doing

ACowboysHeart

More than a few people have been asking me about when I’ll be writing and publishing new stories, what’s happening with our beloved Kalispell Shifters…believe me there’s lots planned and coming soon.

Last year I decided to add the name of writing coach and mentor to my list of skills and long story short, setting up the business has taken me longer than I’d planned. Plus, I’ve been trying to play catch up releasing all the stories I got rights back to.  I thought I’d get back to my regular writing schedule after the new year but I then I updated my other web site and finally came down with the cold bug that seems everyone’s got which zapped a lot of my energy.

Well, enough with the excuses…I did re-release A Cowboy’s Heart (formely titled This Cowboy’s Heart), and I have two more stories to re-release this month.

I plan to add a new story in all my series and yes, I’m even thinking about a new one too.

So thank you for being patient with me loyal fans. I promise to post more stuff here too so if you have any writing related questions or anything you’d like to see, just leave a comment or contact me at vanessadevereaux@gmail.com. You know how much I love hearing from you.

Take care-Vanessa D XO

Just in Time for Halloween-Fly by Night

I am JaneFive years ago I was honored to have a short story included in Just Vamps an anthology published by Evernight Publishing.  As the names suggests, all the stories were about vampires.

I just got rights back to this story and in time for Halloween, I’ve revamped it (yes please excuse the pun), and added another chapter.

I’ve kept the title, Fly by Night and it’s a sexy tale set during the Regency featuring innocent Isabella and the man of the night, James who offers her so much more than a evening of erotic delight.

It’s available at Amazon and costs just 99 cents. Hope you’ll enjoy it.

Filthy Rich and Sexy

Vanessa Devereaux

My latest release is book one in my new series Filthy Rich and Sexy.

They’ll be super short stories (around 5,000 words), focusing on rich and sexy men and the women they love.

The first story first appeared in Keyboards and Kink that was published by Evernight.

Here’s the synopsis and an excerpt-

CEO Ian Corbett’s always had a thing for one of his employees but he knows the rules because he wrote them.

No dating or messing around with anyone in the company.

However, when he sees she’s been using a company computer and on company time to run an online sex chat business, he knows he has just cause to fire her.

Now as ex-employee he’ll be free to ask her out. All he has to do is ask her to come see in his office so he can break the news to her or can he. Will she get the upper hand and will he have to change the rules?

Excerpt-

Jenny sat down and threw the box containing the nuked hotdog on her desk. She’d seen the employee handbook. She knew the rules. No using company time or equipment for outside pursuits.

Now she was going to lose both her jobs. Maybe she could sweet talk him into looking the other way.

She ran her hands through her hair. She hadn’t seen him…well, not face-to-face, since he’d interviewed her last year. She almost hadn’t gotten the job because she’d been so tongue-tied. Not that she was a nervous interviewee but she hadn’t expected him to be so gorgeous. Six feet plus, broad shoulders, dark hair with a bit of a wave to it. During her entire interview she’d had an image of running her fingers through it as he kissed her. And those eyes. He’d looked straight at her every time he’d asked her a question. Dark green with touches of hazel. Mesmerizing and they’d held her spellbound.

She jumped when her phone rang.

Who knew she was here working late besides the janitor and…

She picked it up.

“Hello.”

“Ms. Rasley?”

She swallowed twice in quick succession.

It’s him.

“Yes.”

“Did you get my note? Obviously you did because you’re back at your desk.”

“Yes, and yes, I was just about to head up to your office.”

“Good, I’ll be waiting.”

Jenny looked at her plant, the mug housing her pens, and the award for employee of the month. Maybe she should take them with her because she’d be fired and he might not let her come back to her desk. No, surely he’d let her get her things. She turned off the computer. Sexy Beast would have to find some other girl to chat to tonight. She stood and grabbed her raincoat and put it on before slinging her purse over her shoulder.

She nodded to the janitor again as she tiptoed over the wet floor to reach the elevator.

Her stomach churned as she watched the floors flash by. Jobs were hard to come by these days, and who was to say if she’d find another one she liked as much as this one. She’d do anything to keep it. She’d made up her mind that whatever he asked her to do to make up for this failure to follow the rules she’d do rather than be fired.

Jenny stepped out of the elevator.

That was it.

Sexual favors. No man could resist them.
